Culture Night 12 September, 2009 in Uppsala

Rwanda ­- 15 years after the genocide
Time: 5 May, 2009 at 18.00
Place: The Nordic Africa Institute, Kungsgatan 38, Uppsala.
 
The genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994, was a tragedy not only for Rwanda but also for humanity. April 2009 marks the 15th commemoration of the genocide in which more than a million men, women and children were murdered in one hundred days. While today Rwanda is forward looking and full of hope, the past is not forgotten.
 
Programme
  • Welcome by Fantu Cheru, Research Director, the Nordic Africa Institute.
  • A moment of silence in memory of the genocide victims and lighting candles.
  • The Genocide that could have been avoided, a 22 minutes documentary film.
  • Presentation by Ms Görrel Espelund, Freelance Journalist and Africa correspondent.“The 1994 Genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda”.
  • Testimony from a genocide survivor.
  • Presentation by Mr. Arne Ström, a Former Representative of SIDA in Rwanda: Post Genocide Reconstruction in Rwanda.
  • Address by H.E Ambassador Jacqueline Mukangira, the Ambassador of Rwanda in Sweden.

The program is organised in co-operation with The Embassy of Rwanda, Uppsala Association of International Affairs and The Nordic Africa Institute.

Elina Oinas talks at 'Southern Africa Days', 15 Nov. in Stockholm

Elina Oinas, Nordic researcher at the NAI, will talk at the 'Southern Africa days', organised by the Africa Groups, on a panel on 'HIV in South Africa', 15 November in Stockholm. See the programme.

WALTIC – literary congress in Stockholm 29 June-2 July

More than 1,000 writers, translators and scholars gathered under the heading ‘The value of words’. NAI sponsored the participation of two African writers.

Visit from China 29-30 May 2008

Professor Yang Guang, General Director of the Institutet for West Asian and African Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) visited the Nordic Africa Institute to discuss collaboration between the two institutions.

Sida/SAREC conference in Uppsala 27-29 May 2008

The conference ‘Meeting Global Challenges in Research Cooperation’ was arranged by Sida, Uppsala Centre for Sustainable Development at Uppsala University and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. A few NAI researchers presented their research projects on posters, and the Institute participated with a book exhibition.

Human Rights days (‘MR-dagarna’) in Stockholm 19-20 November 2007
NAI co-arranged two seminars: ‘Dialog eller konfrontation i Zimbabwe?’ and ‘Unga kvinnor i afrikanska krig’. In our information stand, the new series, "Policy Notes" was presented – brief and easily accessible research information on themes such as conflict and trade. More information at www.mrdagarna.org.

Book launch in Stockholm

On 10 May at 13.30-15.30 in collaboration with International IDEA. The books to be launched are Votes, Money and Violence. Political Parties and Elections in Sub-Saharan Africa by Basedau et al (NAI, 2007) and Political parties in Africa: Challenges for sustained multiparty democracy by M.A Mohamed Salih et al (IDEA, 2007).
