CODESRIA is holding its General Assembly in Yaoundé, Cameroon 7-12 December. The theme is “Governing the African Public Sphere”. Director Carin Norberg, research director Fantu Cheru, programme co-ordinator Cyril Obi as well as former programme co-ordinator Yenkong Ngangjoh Hodu will participate in the assembly. The US African Studies Association (ASA) will hold its 50th Annual Meeting in Chicago on November 13-16, 2008. The title for the meeting is "Knowledge of Africa: The Next Fifty Years”. Research Director Fantu Cheru participates in the meeting and will be in the panel of a “special session” on Friday 14 Nov., sponsored by the ASA Board of Directors. The theme for the session is: “Development in Africa: What is the Cutting Edge in Thinking and Policy?”. Read more about the ASA Annual Meeting. Programme co-ordinator Cyril Obi is in India 20-21 November to present a paper on 'Engaging with a Resurgent Africa' on a conference arranged by Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in New Delhi.

 

NAI's guest writer, Tolu Ogunlesi, visits Denmark. On 8 Oct, he visits Roskilde University, where a seminar on Nollywood and nigerian writing is organised. On 9 Oct, he participates in a workshop during the Nordic Africa Days: ‘City Culture, New Culture, Whose Culture?’

The Nordic Africa Institute will participate in the fair with a stand at ‘Internationella Torget’ and several seminars. NAI's participation in the fair (in Swedish).

Representatives from NAI took part in a Network of African Studies in Europe meeting wich was hosted by Centre d’Etudes d’Afrique noire (CEAN) in Bordeaux. Report from the meeting .

 

This international workshop is organised by NAI (the research programme on Post-Conflict Transition, the State and Civil Society in Africa) and the International Peace and Research Institute (PRIO) in Oslo, Norway. More information on the workshop .

The conference ‘Political Economies of Displacement in Post-2000 Zimbabwe’ is organised by the Nordic Africa Institute and Forced Migration Studies Programme at Wits University, Johannesburg.

 

Launch of the Portuguese version of Sellström's Sweden and the Liberation Struggle in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau organised by the project ‘ Nordic documentation on the liberation struggle in Southern Africa’ in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Angola and The National Historical Institute of Angola. The seminar ‘A Dialogue on Darfur’ was arranged by Norwegian Institute of Foreign Policy (NUPI) and the Nordic Africa Institute. Lecturers: Prof. Adam Azzain Mohamed, University of Khartoum, the Sudan, and Jan Egeland, Director of NUPI.

 

Yenkong Ngangjoh Hodu (NAI researcher) will present a paper on "The latest developemnt in EPA negootiations" and Fantu Cheru (research director) on "Nordic Africa Strategies" at this seminar organised  by the Estonian parliament.

 

A half-day seminar on the theme ‘Does Aid Work for the Millenium Development Goals?’ is arranged by UNDP, Forum Syd, the Swedish Government Offices and the International Poverty Centre. NAI director Carin Norberg will give comments on The Great Aid Debate. Programme(pdf).
