The Nobel Prize in Literature 2014 and Africa

NAI library staff has compiled this web dossier to coincide with the announcement of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature.

A few African writers have been recognized the past few years as candidates to the prize. Shortlisted in betting lists this year are (ranking in brackets):

  • Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Kenyan (2)
  • Assia Djebar, Algerian (9)
  • Nawal  el Saadawi, Egyptian (14)
  • Nuruddin Farah, Somali (22)

Polls were open October 6-9. Results: Ngugi wa Thiong'o 41%, Nuruddin Farah 33%, Nawal el Saadawi 18%, Assia Djebar 8%. Total no. of votes: 76.

Update. At least one other African author was mentioned in betting lists: Karel Schoeman, South African.
