Role for diasporas in peace-building in the Horn of Africa
An article on NAI Forum highlights some of the conclusions of a comparative research project on conflict-generated diasporas originating in the Horn of Africa. The project has studied diasporas currently residing in Europe who are actively engaged in their respective countries of origin. Pekka Virtanen, Research Coordinator at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, writes that integration in the host country and engagement in the country of origin are not mutually exclusive, but rather mutually reinforcing factors. Those who are well integrated in the country of residence are usually also those who can make a constructive contribution to peace-building at home.
