Shift of paradigm? - Report from conference in Juba

NAI hosted a conference on 13-14 August in Juba on Self-determination and Secession: Comparing South Sudan and Somaliland. Eleven scholars from six countries presented case studies on South Sudan, Somaliland, Eritrea, Katanga and Biafra. Also papers dealing with general dimensions were presented.
− Colonial borders have in the past marginalized the right of people and instead celebrated the right of the state. Therefore, the independence of South Sudan is of great importance since it may indicate a paradigm shift where people´s rights comes in first place, says NAI researcher Redie Bereketeab.
