Challenges to peace operations

The African Union faces several challenges in achieving success in African peace operations. AU member states are keen to show the world they can deal with conflicts on the continent. However, peace and security issues readily attract international attention and money, so many member states prefer to support other projects and priorities.
− The downside is that AU member states then have less ownership of peace operations. However, the main problem is that international partners often act opportunistically to gain votes at home. They give just enough to claim that they are contributing to peace in Africa, but rarely enough to make a real difference, says NAI researcher Linnéa Gelot.
