Land and forest on Zanzibar

Three researchers from the department of geography and geology at the University of Turku in Finland spent a few days at NAI to read relevant literature and establish contacts at the institute.
They are researching on land use and forest management on Zanzibar. The project aims to come up with alternatives that benefit the local people and are sustainable to environment. The growing tourist-sector is one of the challenges to nature and inhabitants.
− But local people are seldom included. Instead they have to move away from the coastland when hotels are being built. This means less economic opportunities and poverty, says Niina Käyhkö.
