Plagued smallholder agriculture

World Food Day, 16 October

Almost 900 million people around the world suffer from food insecurity.  The 2014 World Food Day theme ‘Family Farming: feeding the world, caring for the earth’ aims to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farmers.

– Widespread poverty, as well as food and income insecurity, plague Africa’s dominant smallholder agriculture, says NAI researcher Atakilte Beyene.
Download his Policy Note ‘Small farms under stress play a huge role for Africa’.

Another new Policy Note deals with whether African resources are used to meet African needs or if they are being exploited to satisfy the needs of other actors facing food and energy insecurity. Read Policy Note ‘Thirsty, hungry and no power?’, by NAI researcher Terje Oestigaard.
