Two terms in office is enough

People have demonstrated in both Burkina Faso and Burundi against presidents who are trying to hold on to power. The majority of voters think that two terms in office is enough.

NAI researcher Jesper Bjarnesen believes that Burkina Faso will develop into a functioning democracy. President Blaise Compaoré resigned after demonstrations when he was running for one more term in office after 27 years as president.

The decisive factor was the support of the international community in solving the political crisis and the strength of the civil society in relation to that of the army. The development in Burundi goes in the opposite direction. In the beginning only opposition members were murdered but now anyone opposing the government will be a victim.
