“Democracy not the target”
Last Friday’s terror attacks in Burkina Faso, that killed 30 people, came at a time when the country is in a critical stage of a frail democratization process.
The terror group al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim) claimed responsibility for the acts. NAI researcher Jesper Bjarnesen, however, rejects the theory that the terrorists were seeking to destroy Burkina Faso’s democratic ambitions.
“I do not see this as an attack specifically targeting Burkina Faso. Rather, it appears to be an act aimed at spreading insecurity across the region as a whole”, Bjarnesen said to Swedish news agency TT.
