"Lessing was important for Zimbabwe's liberation"

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2007 is awarded to the English writer Doris Lessing. The motivation is as follows: "that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny".

- Lessing was important for Zimbabwe's liberation, says Cont Mhlanga, leader of the Amakhosi Theatre in Bulawayo, in Dagens Nyheter 2007-10-12. He points out that she contributed to changing the world opinion for Africa.
Doris Lessing was born in 1919 in Kermanshah, Iran and grew up in the then South Rhodesia. She left Africa in 1949 and settled in London, where she published her first novel. Many of Lessing's novels take place in Africa.
Lessing's first novel The Grass is Singing was published in 1950. It is a chilling story about racist relations, and how they entangle with sexual fears and desires, on the southern African veld. The novel to follow was Martha Quest (1952), the first of five in the series "Children of Violence". The Golden Notebook (1962) was Lessing's real international breakthrough.
