Challenges for Peace and Development in Africa, This project analyzes the norms and practices of the AU as an emerging peace and security actor. Of particular interest are questions of how the AU member states and the AU Commission make use of human protection norms and with what effects. I rely mostly on qualitative methods, such as in-depth, semi-structured interviews with for example AU officials in Addis Ababa. I conduct research on the case of the AU interventions in Darfur, Sudan. Most recently I have looked at the AU’s position on Libya and Ethiopia’s deployment of troops to the Abyei region in Sudan. The project is funded by the Gothenburg Centre of Globalization and Development (GCGD), University of Gothenburg, and in part by the Nordic Africa Institute.
