Mats Hårsmar has a PhD in Rural Development Studies from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala. With an initial research focus on agricultural economics and institutional economics centered on peasant strategies in Burkina Faso and Ghana, he is now focusing on poverty issues more generally. Prior to joining NAI he served as chief analyst at the department of development policies at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and earlier also as head secretary of the Expert Group on Development Issues, EGDI, at the MFA. Further, he has a background in development cooperation and in journalism.
