8 February: Seminar together with Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Department for Development Policy, on "Bridging development policy and research in 'Democratic Development and Human Rights". 14.30 hrs, at the Nordic Africa Institute. Invitations only.
9-10 February: NAI participates in 'Citizenship transformations in a global world', a conference on development research, that takes place in Helsinki, Finland. NAI will attend the conference, displaying publications and providing information about the Institute's research. Keynote speakers at the conference include Pekka Haavisto and Professor Mervat Hatem. 23 February, Nuffield College, England: Mats Utas is a speaker at a workshop on 'Sierra Leone Elections 2012: Between Democracy and Violence'. Read about the workshop at Centre for International Studies' website.
1-2 March at Uppsala University: NAI will co-organise the conference on “Water systems and urbanization in Africa and beyond”. The workshop will be open for everyone. No fees or registration. More information can be found here (pdf). Programme (pdf).

Organized by the Urban Cluster at NAI, the Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University and the African Centre for Cities, South Africa. (Includes public lectures on 7 March, see above). These events are part of the Urbanity Week which is organized in collaboration with the Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University, DevNet (the Development Research Network on Nature, Poverty and Power), and the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University. Another eventduring Urbanity Week is the symposium “Emergent cities: conflicting claims and the politics of informality”. See the annoucement here (pdf).
18-19 October: Nordic Africa Days 2012
The Nordic Africa Days (NAD), the biennial conference of the Nordic Africa Institute, will be hosted at University of Iceland in Reykjavík on October 18-19, 2012.
The deadline for proposing papers and panels is March 1, 2012.
Throughout 2012, the Nordic Africa Institute will celebrate its 50th anniversary – 50 years with Africa in focus. The celebrations in Uppsala will take place in October to coincide with the inauguration of the institute’s new premises in the Botanical Gardens. There will also be anniversary events in Finland in March, in Oslo in May and in Copenhagen in November. The Nordic Africa Days 2012, to be held in Reykjavik in October, will also mark the anniversary. There will also be activities in Africa: in Dakar, Ethiopia or Uganda, and in Pretoria.
